We've heard it everywhere: all the anti-war left wants to do is offer blame and polemic rather than solutions. Our desire to end the war in Iraq is a sign of a cut-and-run cowardice so deep-seated that we might as well invite Osama bin Laden and Hezbollah into our homes. We don't recognize the reality of transnational terrorism, and our isolationism threatens to weaken U.S. resolve in the War on Terror. Okay, okay, we get it. But how do we answer back with
specifics about our
immediate situation rather than simply criticizing the wingnut status quo? Below the fold is a scenario for erstwhile progressives...see if you can hack it, and please don't resort to banal and predictable flames.
Okay, so you're on Hannity and Colmes representing the anti-war left. Sean clears his throat, gives you that "You Treasonous FUCK!" look of his, and says the following:
"Let me ask you this. It's 2008, and the Democrats have taken over both houses of Congress and just won the presidency. You now control the American government and therefore any response to any terrorist action is YOUR responsibility. Three days later, a member of Hezbollah, aided by Iran, sneaks into Tel Aviv and detonates a nuclear weapon, killing a million people. Hezbollah announces that it has possession of three more nukes but won't say where they'll detonate them. Now, you can say this is an unrealistic scenario, but most independent experts on nuclear terrorism say it's not just realistic, it's actually likely at some point in the next ten years. Now, what would you do under those circumstances? What SPECIFIC diplomatic and military actions would you take? And next, given that Iran likely possesses a nuclear weapon NOW and there are thousands of Hezbollah members who would be more than happy carrying one of these weapons into Jerusalem, how can you justify NOT taking these actions NOW, preemptively, given the threat of another Holocaust?"
My hunch is that I'll get a truckload of ungrammatical comma splices calling me a wingnut plant, but believe me, I'm not. I"m just curious about where we are right now in formulating a real, tenable response to the kinds of specific threats nutjobs like Ahmenidejab and Hezbollah are promulgating.
