Chris Matthews took down
Diana Irey, John Murtha's challenger for Congress this November, on tonight's episode of
Hardball.
It was such a great conversation that, for the first time in a while, I didn't get extremely upset whenever the Republican opened his/her mouth. And that's solely due to the fact that Matthews did not take any of her bullshit (at least until the end, where he had to make face and thank her for being on).
Flip it, stick it, and bulift it.
The first glimpse of the discussion came before the interview even began. Matthews preceded the commercial break by commenting on Irey's view that Murtha doesn't represent mainstream America. Matthews quickly pointed out that a majority of Americans are now anti-war.
Cut to Commercial.
Then the interview began. And it started off with a bang.
I guess Irey's campagin sent Matthews a letter that contained questions for Matthews to ask Murtha. Irey's response was that Murtha doesn't answer certain questions and that possibly Matthews could recieve a response to them.
But what was really interesting was that the letter was also a "reminder" to Matthews that he has a brother (a Repub) running for Lt. Governor in Pennsylvania. Matthews was peeved.
When he asked her what the letter was for, she played dumb and said she didn't know. Matthews kept asking her in different ways why exactly she brought up that fact, and she still insisted that she had "no idea" what was meant by the comment about Matthews' brother.
Matthews asked her if this was some kind of intimidation. She, again, kept her smile and played clueless. After this, Matthews said that they should move on to more adult issues and he turned the subject to Iraq.
She gave the same old stories that we've heard: the soldiers are saving their snacks for the children; we're making great progress; we're building up the Iraqi security forces. Blah blah blah.
It was just nice. It seemed every time I had a rebuttal for her statements, Matthews said the same thing.
I hope the transcript's up soon. I'll add it when it does.
If C&L posts the video, I'll link to it or just delete this diary altogether.
