On my bike commute home today, mulling over all the recent significant events, and unable to get Bush's broken-record slogans out of my head after his asinine speech today about the NSA program, the thought occurred to me: what we (progressives) are doing is Fighting for Democracy, and independence, here so we don't need to over there.
We are fighting for votes to be counted properly, fighting for elections that are not bought and paid for by special interests, fighting for separation of powers, fighting for energy independence, fighting for people to think long term, fighting for our health, fighting for our voices to be heard. WE are fighting FOR each other.
If we had a real Democracy here, instead of the corporate-funded fascism we are exhibiting, we could be something for other countries to aspire to again. Instead, we have become a laughing stock when we talk about exporting democracy, spreading democracy, etc. The purely nominal version of democracy we currently have does not exactly inspire confidence in 'Democracy' as a desireable goal.
On the other hand, because what we have is so transparently based on money and elite rulers, the current administration comes across as incredibly hypocritical with its 'promoting democracies' language. This is the perfect invitation for other countries to hold us in contempt. After all, what pisses people off more than a hypocrite? [Perhaps a hypocrite with lots of guns, money, and bombs]. We would undoubtedly have much more support in the world and less violence directed toward us, if we were a real democracy.
Bush's 'fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here' is an obvious crock of shit. But, if we can win the fight for Democracy here, we won't need to be fighting 'over there'.
Anyway, I thought this 'Fighting for Democracy' slogan, or some improvement on it, could be useful in our efforts to get the country back on track. Maybe not. Your thoughts?
