Much has been said, and even more written, in recent weeks regarding Ned Lamont's victory over Joe "I'm Bigger Than Democracy" Lieberman in the Connecticut primaries. Even as we watch this drama unfold we also see the Iraq War increasingly going down the drain and the Bush Administration getting increasingly desperate for ways to spin the disaster.
Yesterday brought the news that the "Marine Corps will soon begin ordering thousand of its troops back to active duty because of a shortage of volunteers for Iraq and Afghanistan--the first involuntary recall since the early days of the war.
As many as 2,500 Marines will be brought back at a time, and there is no cap on the total number who may be forced back into service..."
My god, is there no end to this madness? Is there no point at which this Administration, and it's fawning, obsequious, sycophantic followers--that's you, Joe--will admit the disaster they have led us into, admit their plan--so far as they have one--isn't working, admit that they are killing endless numbers of America's sons and daughters to no purpose?
I am always amazed, though perhaps I shouldn't be, at the willingness of people like Bush, Cheney and Lieberman, who lack the courage to serve themselves, to send people like me into combat to stoke their missing manhood. I wonder if I should be expecting my recall to active duty anytime soon? After all, it's only been 16 years since my Marine Corps contract ran out, and only 8 years since my Navy contract ended.
Surely I'm still in the window!
Oh, and don't forget that this shortage of volunteers comes in spite of the fact that the Army has raised age limits to 42 and is apparently allowing in anyone with a pulse who can fog a mirror.
And yet we continue to hear about how Ned Lamont's victory shows that the radical left and the, get ready to gasp--bloggers--have taken over the Democratic Party, and how that will lead to our downfall.
I beg to differ.
First of all, Inspector, when 60% or more of the American people believe the war is a mistake, when 75% of the military wants out by the end of the year without conditions, the obvious conclusion is that WE are in the mainstream, and Bush, Cheney, Lieberman et al. are not!
Second, and this is the part that someone needs to explain to Joe "Call Me The King" Lieberman, we have a thing in America called democracy. We sure were proud of the ink stained fingers in Iraq, but I guess we aren't so proud of it here. The people have spoken, Joe. They don't want you. Take your ball and go home, you arrogant anti-democratic gas bag! (yeah, I said it, go ahead and quote me)
And finally, to the rest of the Democratic Party "leaders": The American people desperately want leadership. Won't you please give it to us! Forget the polls and go out and stand strong for what we believe in. The republicans do it and people vote for them even when they don't agree.
Folks don't need to agree with us lockstep on every issue. They just want to know we are strong and that we stand for something. Let's show them that we are and that we do! Let's show them that we ARE the Party with answers and solutions to ALL the problems facing America today.
If we can't do that, or refuse to do that, or just plain don't have the courage to do that, then we can kiss our Party goodbye, and the Constitution along with it.
