As we head to trip #488, we heard news that my opponent was lauded by a local
newspaper for stopping in a small town in east Texas and visiting the newspaper
editor, a friend to hers for many decades. That
one stop was contrasted with my
campaign, and she apparently claimed that I avoid small towns. Since we know she
reads
my diaries, which have covered hundreds of small town trips, the reference
couldn't have been an oversight.
We enjoy the strategy though: let's make this race a referendum on who has
campaigned harder and listened better in small towns throughout Texas!
Meanwhile, KBH was in a Rio Grande Valley city being embarrassed by the rejection
of her latest wacky immigration proposal by the Director of Homeland Security.
The media was busy covering the revelation she
hadn't had the courage to file
the proposal as a bill, and no media covered her broken promise to fight for a
VA hospital south of San Antonio, after she relegated the idea to "study". After
two terms plus (no media covered her
broken Contract with America to term limit
to two terms), American veterans are in a worse position than ever in history.
The Disabled Veterans of America released her ratings. She voted
AGAINST their
interests more often than
FOR, scoring a sad
42 percent ranking.
Poor treatment of the military as they exit service and in their civilian lives
harms us individually and as a nation. It's more than a moral obligation to
honor those who risked everything. Mistreatment of veterans harms recruitment to the
all-volunteer army and
diminishes national security and deterrence.
We welcome back one of our first volunteers, who joined the Navy and served
honorably, and came home safely. He now can attend college and graduate school,
the reason he enlisted. He is a sophomore at UH and returned to the campaign
yesterday. He is in the Naval Reserve.
We miss our student volunteers in the office during the day as they have started
school, but our moms and dads, retired folks, college students, and so many more
have filled out their ranks. And we are getting great help still from students
at home who blog and research and distribute materials when they can.
One of our outstanding volunteers this summer gave permission for us to use his
letter of departure. Damarcus was mature, independent, and articulate on the
phone. He helped draft many of the reply letters to individuals writing in:
Dear Barbara,
I am writing this thank you letter to show my gratitude and appreciation for the
miraculous opportunity to work as an intern on your political campaign. Words
cannot express the excitement I felt when I received this opportunity. Working
as an intern on the Radnofsky U.S. Senate campaign has not only given me first
hand experience in the campaign arena but, it has also given me the courage to
push forward in life. Observing your fighting sense of character to win, you
have inspired me to do the same in every situation I might face in life. My only
hope is that my generation of young professionals will follow in your footsteps
to make a great impact as you have. Good luck and once again, THANK YOU!
Sincerely,
Damarcus Williams.
