There is very little I can say that hasn't already been said many times about the importance of and opportunity presented by the mid-term elections.
Bringing Troops Home, The Erosion of Civil Liberties, Preserving Social Security, Sound Economic Policies, Energy and Restoring America's Image are all on the line. And every one of us can and should do all we can to make a difference.
Volunteering your time on a campaign is a concrete and very satisfying way to do your part to change the direction of this country. And with nearly 60 days left until the election it's time to roll up your sleeves and get busy. If you've been looking for an opportunity to do just that consider joining me in Canvassing for Lois Murphy this Sunday, Sept. 17th
Lois Murphy is a terrific progressive candidate (and part of the
Act Blue roster. She's back after an extremely close race in 2004 to take on Jim Gerlach. Gerlach has
taken money from Tom Delay, Bob Ney and Duke Cunningham. He's doing his best to distance himself from Bush, but given that he's voted with him 79% of the time, that will be hard to do.
This is an EXTREMELY competitive race. The National Journal has it as the 3rd most likely to switch over to Democratic hand and Larry Sabato lists it as a lean Democratic seat. Lois has more cash on hand and a will to win.
Turnout is going to be a decisive factor in this race so GOTV efforts are crucial. In terms of results canvassing is one of the most effective GOTV tools; a Yale Study showed that door-to-door canvassing can raise turn out between 7%-12% If you're in the NYC area and would like to make this kind a difference join me and actNOW this Sunday, September 17th on a canvassing trip to Pennsylvania..
Not only is canvassing one of the most effective GOTV tools, it's also one of the most fun - really. If you decide to come along on this trip I can promise you that that you'll meet interesting people, receive good training and make a real difference.
If you want more information or would like to join me on this canvassing trip go to the actNOW website for more information or to RSVP.
Hope to see some of you there!
