I'm effin' furious, probably more pissed than I've been since Nov '04. It looks like a majority of Democrats are going to vote for this egregious torture bill-expecting it to help them in the up coming elections. They never learn.
Glenn Greenwald has this post up at Salon discussing the Democrats cowardly reaction to this bill and what will likely happen in the election because of it. He also links to a post by Jack Balkin in which Mr. Balkin argues that dems deserve to lose(and likely will) if they vote for this atrocity. I can't say I disagree.
I've given $100 to candidates this cycle(Lamont and Webb), much lower than in '04, I just can't get myself to give anymore. At least in my Congressional District I have a chance to vote a turd out of office and I'll do that(although I haven't done it yet I'll send his democratic challenger $50 also). I can't say what the reaction will be though from voters that are registered independent, I guess I wouldn't blame them if they just said f#ck it.
Now I understand it's still a bit early to talk about '08 but given the fact that it looks like this bill is going to pass, I think it's legitimate to bring it up. There are two dem politicians many consider to be the front runners for '08-both of them notably absent on this issue-I guess too scared to take a stand. I'm talking about Hil and Obama. Now I guess I'll have to vote for one(or both if Hil picks Obama to be her running mate) of them in the general, but I'll give as much money as I can to their closest competitor(I hope Feingold), and with any luck that person will win the primary. And hell I REALLY, REALLY hope Hil and Obama find their voice and come out strong against this, but I won't hold my breath.
