" . . . some of my colleagues think my research reinforces the stereotype of repressed, uptight conservatives . . . "
-dream researcher Kelly Bulkeley on his study of the differences between liberal and conservative dreams
It's official: We're more interesting.
A study conducted at John F. Kennedy University shows that liberals tend to be more imaginative dreamers than conservatives. It says that "conservative males appear to sleep the most soundly and remember the fewest dreams, while liberal women are the most restless sleepers and fantastical dreamers." Bulkeley added that liberals "don't just dream about what is, but what could be or what they wish could be."
"If you've recently dreamed about sex with a stranger, flying, or the dead coming back to life," the CanWest News Service article began, "you're probably a liberal instead of a conservative."
The study goes on to point out that conservatives have less nightmares, more lucid dreams (in which you are aware of being asleep), and more sexual dreams involving the person they're currently sleeping with. Also, twenty percent more liberal women dream about homosexual encounters than conservative women. In short, conservatives dream realistically, and liberals dream and have fun -- when they're not having nightmares, of course.
Of course this study won't contribute anything to political discourse (if Rush Limbaugh can help it), but you have to admit, this is something to think about. Nighty-night.
