How many times have we heard that? To listen to our government and the media, you might think that Osama bin Laden has died more times than Murdock, MacGyver's arch-nemesis. Tora Bora, dialysis, can't move his left side, low blood pressure, wound in his foot, kidney problems, aging rapidly, fatally sick; what haven't we been fed yet? Our leaders hate to admit that bin Laden is very much alive, because that will mean they have failed. They annihilated Afghanistan, they turned Iraq into a bloody civil war battleground/terrorist haven, they tortured prisoners of war, they illegally wiretapped our foreign phone conversations but, alas, no Osama bin Laden.
They have been failing for five years and will probably continue to do so unless, of course, they know exactly where bin Laden is and are waiting to unveil him at the time when they will get the biggest political bounce (October surprise, maybe?). It occurs to me that our Bush administration needs Osama bin Laden to be alive. That way they can justify all of the seedy things they do.
"We have to invade Iraq/n. We have to torture our prisoners of war. We have to hold innocent people without trial for indeterminate lengths of time. We have to have a Republican government. Why? OSAMA BIN LADEN'S STILL OUT THERE!"
I have a different view. We have to tread lightly when it comes to foreign affairs, especially in the volatile Middle East. We have to treat our POWs humanely. We, the democrats, have to take back Congress and the White House. Why? OSAMA BIL LADEN'S STILL OUT THERE!
