James Webb, Virginia Senate candidate, has previewed his new ad in an email to me and other supporters. If you're on Jim's email list, you probably got the email. Have you watched the ad?
Well, I have watched the ad and I am pissed. Why do newly re-converted Democrats find it necessary to lionize St. Ronnie, the GOP's saint? I lost many, many friends to AIDS under President Reagan's inattention and I don't consider his from-beyond-the-grave salute to Webb something worth trumpeting to Virginia voters, of which I was one for many years. Reagan's shredding of the social safety net was the prelude to BushCo's abandonment of Katrina victims. The Democratic Party's nominees should not be championing St. Ronnie. Our party has many of its own heroes, Mr. Webb, some of them patriotic Virginians. Surely you could find a patriotic, well-loved Democrat to speak well of you in your ad?
Mr. Webb, if your path took you astray in the 1980's and you found yourself allied with Ronald Reagan, I won't hold it against you. But Virginia voters deserve better, and the Democrats nationwide who support you deserve better, than this ad. Please find another way to appeal to voters who are embarassed and ashamed to have George Felix Allen, Jr., as their Senator.
