Last night I met the next Representative to the US House from Colorado's sixth district, Bill Winter. Yes, CO-6 is going blue. Count on it.
How do I know? Because Bill Winter is just the sort of candidate who can wake this district up. There is no reason Bill can't inspire a broad range of voters - Dems, Repubs, independents, non-voters, what have you - to back him in November and send him to Washington. Bill is committed to doing the people's business. All we've got to do in the next two months is get out there and make sure enough CO-6 voters know who Bill Winter is, and the rest will take care of itself.
Seven years of living in this district, and in the one opportunity Tom Tancredo had to make a personal impression on me, he left me cold. I put him on the spot in a public forum (one of your "Destroy Social Security" dog and pony shows in early 2005), and his response was so slick and evasive and
revealing that people afterward thanked me for doing it. Tancredo is in Washington to serve himself and BushCo,
not the people of CO-6, and the people know it.
Bill Winter, on the other hand, is a man dedicated to public service. He's no political careerist. He enlisted in the Marines at 17. He later served in the Navy. He's taught school in the inner city and coached high school football. Now he wants to continue his service by going to the House. He deserves that chance. He's earned it.
Last night Bill talked about having been born in Greeley, orphaned and then adopted at age 5. He talked about how lucky he was to have been adopted at all, because he was born with a heart condition. He talked about how his good fortune early in life motivates him today to serve others, to make a difference in the lives of other people, particularly those less fortunate among us.
Bill has said that if the Congressional thing doesn't work out, he'll go back to coaching football. I believe he will. Hearing him talk about his players last night, I have no doubt that Bill will miss them and be missed tremendously when he takes the CO-6 seat. But right now, this district needs him more.
