Buy only compact fluorescent bulbs. It's simple, and that commitment alone is a way you can make an immediate difference in the battle against global warming.
Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute, and a paragon of precision in environmental writing, points out that a compact fluorescent bulb uses only one fourth as much electricity, lasts 10 times as long, and easily saves $50 during its lifetime. The bulbs can and must be recycled afterward, and the mercury in each is a fraction of the mercury released for each coal-energized incandescent we replace. It makes perfect sense - for all of us.
If the entire United States made the switch, that would facilitate shutting down 80 coal-fired plants.

Could Close 270 Coal-Fired Power Plants , Brown's fine in-depth article on the growing movement to eliminate incandescents as soon as possible. It's a great read if you have time. Either way, let's just switch, right now.
