The biggest issue facing our Western Capitalist Society is not terrorism, as is the popular conception, but in fact Climate Change.
Economists realize that unless this issue is addressed immediately there will be seroius economic results.
The End of the West as We Know It
"..... radically destructive climate change, then we must recognize that everything that the West now stands for will be rejected by future generations. The entire democratic capitalist system will be seen to have failed utterly as a model for humanity and as a custodian of essential human interests."
"[What will}.....our descendants make of a political and media culture that devotes little attention to this threat when compared with sports, consumer goods, leisure and a threat from terrorism that is puny by comparison? Will they remember us as great paragons of human progress and freedom? They are more likely to spit on our graves."
says Anatol Lieven, who has won the George Orwell Prize for Political Writing
Mr Lieven recently co-authored with John C Hulsman, Ethical Realism addressing Iraq and getting beyond the neocons idealistic and impractical frames for the world.
The neo's who say they embrace freedom and human rights would be wise to recognize how radically climate change will affect economics and the constant growth quotient that they embrace as providing freedom to societies, will be just as meaningless as George Soros efforts to improve democracy and end suffering, unless climate change is addressed immediately if not sooner.
The Race Against Climate Change
Many major business are jumping on board this train. Wisdom says that constant growth and consumption as an economic equation will soon become outdated.
The President is expected to address this in his State of the Union tomorrow.
While Iraq dominates the news cycle, and our countries standing has diminished in the eyes of the world, there is something much more urgent afoot, and that is addressing climate change. It has become a human rights issue.
Any candidate running for President will have to address climate change and the rise of China. To rise to the challange we must first extricate ourselves from Iraq and put our resources to much better use.
I hope progressive minds put their head together to help come up with realistic solutions to this pressing problem........ which is a wholly bipartisan issue. Can the world come together and work to solve this challenge?
The answer is yes, and it could be an exciting new frontier to take down culture barriers that have been put across our paths for far too long now.
Imagine the liberation and freedom if every home in India, Africa, and the rural Western US was powered with electricy from an affordable solar panel!
A solar panel the size of an iPhone! Cool dude!
