Made you look. This is a drunken blow-off Saturday night music diary.
What was the most exciting musical discovery you made in 2006?
I walked into the world section of Virgin Records on Michigan Ave. in Chicago, and heard a wonderful song. I asked what it was, and was told it was "O Filosofo" by Jorge Ben. I walked right over and bought "The Definitive Collection", which I have since bought 6 more copies to give away as gifts. "Zumbi" and "Pais Tropical" are two of the most beautiful songs I have heard in my life.
Oh, jump.
I had then read up on Jorge Ben, bought a couple of Brazilian samplers, and have opened up a world of Tropicalia, Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, The Girl From Ipanema, Seo Jorge.
It's like discovering Rockabilly 30 years ago all over again.
Do you remember the first time you heard London Calling by The Clash? Or Going Underground by The Jam? Or when you first stumbled upon The Harder They Fall? The freshness of the music. The pure jolt of genius. You can almost always remain young as long as you keep finding that new CD, that new or old artist you never considered, play it and immerse yourself in the ebulition of energy that burst forth 45 years ago with Esquerita, or last year with StepFather by People Under the Stairs.
What was your most exciting music discovery this last year?
