If these new rules from China take effect on May this year, it will make people try to adopt children from China extra-difficult. Even Bradgelina are not qualified for adoption from China under the new policy. Many people may have to switch to other Asian countries, e.g. Vietnam or others. Why does China government want to do this, the rules are tough and weird too.
Let check out the new policy, the following types of families are not allowed to adopt.
Single parents.
Parents over 50 years of age, unless adopting a special needs
child where the current limit of 55 applies.
Parents with a Body Mass Index over 40, which is
medically considered morbid obesity.
Parents currently taking anti-depression medication.
Parents who have a sever facial deformity. No guidance on how
this might be judged.
Also additional rules:
parents must have been married at least two years. If previously divorced, the parents must have been in their current marriage for at least five years. Both parents must also have a high school diploma. Some press reports mention that parents must have a combined net worth of $80,000 (USD).
Why single parents? I think this is more of a cultural reason, it runs against Chinese traditional family. This will definitely wipe off a large portion of applicants.
And what are the problems with "Parents over 50 years of age"? I thought the "50" years are now the new "40" years old. People at this age probably provide a better environment for children. I do not understand why they exclude this category.
If China doesn't want fat people to adopt, they might just as well exclude most of us here. The point may be that the Chinese authority afraid adopted kids will follow the footstep of their parents and become fat again, but based on the .Danish Adoption Study this is not the case. Their decision is very unscientific, and it just looks like an arbitrary decision from a bunch of old bureaucrat.
Parents currently taking anti-depression medication. I can understand this one, but how are you going to implement this? Any anti-depression drugs will dis-qualify you? If you take only a short period of time, will this disqualify you?
Parents who have a sever facial deformity. What? If you have severe acne when you're teenager, and leave scars on your face, will this disqualify you? This policy is very discriminatory. But who says policies from China are always fair !?
I think the underlying reasons may be that China is looking at itself as a prosperous country, and they want the world to see them has the same footing of any other modern countries; baby-adoption from institutions is a no-no. This NY Times article try to explain the mystery behind the new policy.
