This every Tuesday Diary will continue to track the candidates' positions on the Pledge to Ban New Unsequestered Coal
THE PLEDGE
I Support A Ban On New Coal Plants Lacking Technology To Capture Carbon Dioxide Emissions.
New OBAMA position below the fold.
Obama came out today with a new statement.
"Obama will use whatever policy tools are necessary, including standards that ban new traditional coal plants, to ensure that we move quickly to commercialize and deploy low carbon coal technology.
It is disconcerting that Obama has stepped up to the threshhold, but has not stepped over and committed to banning pulverized coal plants. It would be great if his campaign would clarify the statement.
Edwards' statement:
"I will require that all new coal-fired plants be built with technology needed to capture carbon dioxide emissions. Plants can use integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology or other effective approaches. As a result, the plants built today should be able to permanently and safely store their carbon emissions tomorrow."
Edwards supports a Ban on pulverized coal plants. Supporting a requirement to have IGCC is the first step and meets the Pledge threshold; but a more complete position will include a technical and financial path to implement sequestration before the plants break ground.
