It looks like Fred has had a great week! After a slow start, it seems like the rest of the nation and especially values voters are finally catching on to learn what a GREAT president Thompson will be.
Follow me below the jump to read what's been going on in the Thompson juggernaut!
First up?
The Washington Post writes about Fred's appearance at the Values Voters Summit:
The activists and evangelical voters appeared to tolerate Fred Thompson's speech this morning, offering polite applause for his pledges to oppose abortion and gay marriage. And then Thompson offered this promise: that in the first hour as president, he would "go into the Oval Office, close the door and pray for the wisdom to do the right thing."
The crowd leapt to their feet, applauding and yelling their approval to a smiling Thompson, who -- it seems -- had finally pushed the right button.
But even then, it wasn't hard to find a critic.
"That sounds great, but is it real? Or is he acting? That's what you don't know," said Stu Mendelsohn, a Virginia attorney and former Republican county supervisor in Fairfax.
Nah, I'm sure that Fred's promise to pray as his first priority in his new administration is heartfelt.
US News and World Reports in reporting on the same story, informs us of the kind of decisive leadership we can expect from our Dear Freddie:
Late in his speech, Thompson said he's been asked what he'd do in his first 100 days as president. His answer, he said, is "I don't really know—it would depend on the circumstances."
Townhall.com gives our guy another glowing endorsement:
What’s the most important attribute for a successful politician?
It’s obviously not intelligence.
There's more:
While candidates can soar to victory without smarts or character, the one essential ingredient for any serious contender is, finally, energy: a level of intensity, drive, enthusiasm, vigor, force, that demands that voters pay attention. Every consistently successful politician in recent American history has possessed this indispensable quality --- and that’s a major problem for Fred Thompson’s current Presidential campaign.
Perhaps more importantly, this week we learn that Freddie has agreed with the Westboro Baptist Church's very own Fred Phelps on the issue of gay rights:
Members of an anti-gay church best known across the United States for holding rallies at the funerals of U.S. soldiers says Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson once "saw eye to eye" with them on homosexuality.
The Westboro Baptist Church is urging Thompson to support its stance.
The church has angered lawmakers in several states by rallying at soldiers' funerals, claiming the deaths are retribution for the United States' acceptance of homosexuality.
And in a can't-miss opinion piece in America's finest News Source Thompson writes lovingly about his wife:
My fellow Americans, in the coming presidential election, the voters of this nation will plot a course for the future. There are many candidates, each of whom brings a different vision of that future. But only one has the conviction and strength to lead this great country. Only one is a popular television and film actor ready to face the challenges of the 21st century head-on. And, most importantly, there is only one candidate with a bombshell trophy wife nearly a quarter-century younger than himself.
Are you feeling Fredtastic? Fredtabulous?
I know I am!
