49 Democrats
49 Republicans
2 Independents
1 always votes with the Dems
1 Lieberdog always votes with the Republicans
So just to get the chance to vote you need to peel away 10 Republicans 20.4 % of the Republicans. To override a veto that is 19 votes or 38.8 % of Republicans.
Now keep in mind thanks to the previous DECADES of Republican recruiting, voting and vetting there are almost no moderates Republican Senators, maybe 2
Realistically why would 10 Republicans defect if they know they can't override the veto. No upside for most of them since it is unlikely to pass and they will have to pay for crossing the White House.
Yet it gets worse, thanks to the Republicans we do have much more moderates and Blue Dogs Democrats.
So they have a brick wall and we have a wall of Jello. Yikes!
I am not happy with the Democrats performance but that is the reality. The house majority is better but it also can be beaten by the Republican Juggernaut.
I AM NOT making excuses for the Congress I am trying to understand why they do what they do.
My best idea to change the dynamics is to get more Democrats elected, especially progressive Democrats. Alot of these guys are followers and they will move in that direction if pulled by the right leaders.
Attacking Democrats makes us feel better but is not productive. Going after the vulnerable Republicans is very productive
