A Constitutional Convention, versus paying attention to the one we have:
This idea was, admittedly, originally posted as a rather late comment to an extremely long thread, on Larry Sabato's constitutional convention proposal.
It will probably get lost therein, and so I'm going to post it as a diary. I only hope that its relevance -- to the topic, to the larger political picture, to what America is facing and our approach for dealing with it, as well as our focus in the Democratic Party -- warrants its additional consideration here. The point is very brief, and I hope and believe that after reading, you will see why I have suggested it, and made it a diary.
"I really liked your comment.
However, though reasonable, I really had a problem with this part:
The point of this series, as I understand it, was to engage in a national discussion about making changes to our Constitution in an effort to confront some of the serious problems we face that the Founding Fathers could not have imagined.
What is being missed, and somewhat ignored even on this site, is that right now we are facing problems THAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS DID IMAGINE; the threat of some type of unchecked power by one branch of Government. And the Constitution was created in large measure to prevent against it ever becoming a possibility.
And this, the greatest problem that we do face, which the Constitution WAS set up to address, we ignore, while instead we wax on about this (presently) silly idea of a 'constitutional convention.'"
Thus, the idea could be expressed this way: A Constitutional Convention, versus paying proper attention to the one we have. There has not been enough focus on the latter; by the Media, by the Democratic Party, on here. What we can do is pay attention to it and write about it in a way that can be shared with those outside of this site, and also help focus Democrats, moderate Republicans, and the Media, in particular, on it.
It should not be largely Charlie Savage's battle alone.
