I don’t know if anyone will read this diary, but if you do could you be so kind as to comment whether you feel as I do? Because for quite some time now I’ve had this giant pit gnawing at my stomach and I’m just curious if others feel as I do.
I'm pretty sure most of the people perusing this site know Jim Kunstler. Reading his essay every Monday morning is surely a bucket of ice water right to the face-a real sobering read. He's been predicting a collapse of our "American way of life" for quite some time now, and it's looking like its coming sooner rather than later.
In this Monday's essay he argues that in actuality george bush perfectly represents our nation, a stupid nation of know nothings incapable of admitting the truth about its own behavior, I can't say I disagree. Our nation is about to go over a cliff and it's probably much closer than anyone thinks. And it seems all our political and media institutions are determined to ignore it and most of the nation’s population also (although that may be a result of no leadership from the political/media establishments).
Oil has crept to over $80 dollars a barrel and Mr. Kunstler tells us that the nation’s second (probably) most important business section (NYT) has completely ignored the possible consequences of this event. How can this be? Sooner or later the economy is going to feel the effects of this, though I doubt people will even understand that the price will actually never go down again!!!
The price of oil has been a cause of (along with massive importation of consumer goods) the US dollar recently dropping to parity with the Canadian dollar, as far as I can tell an unprecedented occurrence (not to mention it's trading at 1.40-1.00 against the Euro-ouch!!!). This event generated a lot of diaries here but I didn't see much play in the republican controlled corporate media. I may be wrong, if so anyone reading this please correct me.
Many people here write stories or diaries regarding the development of future energy sources-I don’t believe this will even have a chance to happen. The collapse of the supply of the world’s current dominate energy source will surely preclude it.
I hope I’m wrong but I believe there’s going to be catastrophic economic dislocations coming down the pike a "Perfect Storm" if you will.
