A diary by someone calling himself Packer Fan had sparked a boatload of comments and while most comments reflected the belief the diary was Trollish, I thought it sparked a hell of a conversation so I had recommended it. Alas, I was the only one to do so.
Further comments revealed some folks had troll rated all of Packer Fan’s comment into oblivion. Now, that strikes me as injurious to the democratic process but the TU’s out there are TUs for a reason so I can let that go the way of the diary; slowly sliding off the list. I did, however pick up some great recipes on the way down (mmmm, cobbler, uhuhhhuhhhuhh... thanks Dave1042). Still, the diary begat a conversation in my head about why I am the way I am about abortion.
My comment reflected why I vote pro-choice even though I’m a believer in pro-life. I guess that makes me a hypocrite but since I’m never gonna get pregnant I don’t really care. My wife would be pregnant with my baby not my fetus and my daughter with my grandchild not her fetus but that’s because we are safe, legal, and rare in our house.
I want abortion to be rare because I want our world and our society to reflect a positive view of the future. I understand that there are situations that require in us the fortitude to make choices and a free society means free to make those choices based on the advice and council of our family, our physician, and our flying spaghetti monster. I believe abortion should be treated like any other medical procedure, should not be forbidden especially in cases of rape and incest, and should be thought of only in extreme medical cases. Rare because we are putting together a world where a woman who says she's pregnant is an occasion of joy and not another log on the fire of uncertainty. I want abortion to be rare because when someone gets pregnant they want to get pregnant and they want to be parents and they want to bring a child in the world because the world is a hopeful place.
Yeah, I know, pipe-dreaming is a sport I’ve long since gone pro.
Still, I want to share with you some of the reasons we as Democrats can claim the mantle of abortion rights advocates that I don’t think get a lot of play yet in light of the direction this country is heading in I think it would be wise to talk about.
We are not the abortion on demand party as we have been framed. No one wants to have an abortion! This is a question of whether or not the Government can tell its citizens what to do with their reproductive life.
I don't want girls to decide abortion over a condom but I certainly don't want to have the government tell me:
My wife is being investigated under suspicion of murder because it's reported that she had a miscarriage under "odd" circumstances.
Having sex while a child is in the room is the same as having sex while a child is in the womb and thus subject to indecency laws.
Working at a job such as Policeman or Fireman or any sort of "milk straining" employment while pregnant is forbidden as this is child endangerment.
Couples must bear at least one child for their marriage to be legal.
Having more and more children is your patriotic duty in light of the rising Muslim hordes.
Any thoughts?
