Senator Dick Durbin stopped in my hometown this morning and I had the opportunity to meet him. He spoke for a few minuteds and answered questions from the audience. More on that below.
Senator Durbin came to my hometown in south-central Illinois today. He came to dedicate a new town hall that will used for elections and for township meetings. He said that former Representative Lane Evans was instrumental in getting the funding but was unable to attend due to conditions related to Parkinsons disease and he wanted to be there as a honor to Evans. He spoke about SCHIP and explained it in an easy to understand manner and agreed that he would continue to fight for an over ride of Bush's veto. He stated that Bush believes a person making 60000 a year is well off. However, once taxes are taken out and everyday bills are paid, that person cannot afford 800.00 a month for insurance. He asked that we continue to pressure our elected reps to get the veto over ridden. He also discussed the Iraq War and expressed his disgust that the Iraquis will not step up and take more control. He said that as long as the Malki government can dial 9-1-1 and we send more money and troops that no solution will happen.
Durbin also introduced the Democratic congressional candidate that he is backing for the 19th District to run against John Shimkus of Foley-Gate fame. His name is Joe McMenamin. He is an Afghan war vet who has stepped aside from his law practice in Springfield to run. McMenamin spoke briefly and and was well received. Shortly later, a man stood up in the audience and told him that he had served in Vietnam and wanted to thank him for his service and gave him a salute. McMenamin saluted back and the audience applauded. I thought to myself that Limbaugh would have a hard time convincing this crowd that either of these two men are "phoney" soldiers.
Durbin wrapped up by touching on energy issues, infracture concerns, and jobs. All in all in was a good time. I am proud to claim him as my senior senator and am energized to elect a "fighting Dem" to Congress!
