George was drunk and raging at a friend about the chaos in the world around him. His friend suggested he take a little time to relax, perhaps go watch his son play sports. George grumbled and wandered out of the bar into the bright light of the day. Taking the advice he drove to his son’s soccer game and caught the tail end. His son, surprised to see his father, pushed hard to show his strength and resolve – driving the ball towards the goal, he scores the winning point. But walking off the field it is clear he had been clipped and he is limping.
George displays a wide grin "I knew you could do it; a chip off the old block." He glances at the raw gash in his son’s shin and thinks "that’ll make him stronger." George says to his son, Chip, "hey, let’s celebrate, I’ll buy you an ice-cream Sunday". They drive into town and park. Instead of going to the ice-cream parlor George takes Chip into the local bar and sits him down in a dingy booth. Chip is trying to show he is strong even though his shin is in serious pain. George takes down a menu, looks at it and sees no ice-cream to say nothing of ice-cream Sunday. He say’s "Chip, you’re a big boy now, so I’m going to get you coffee cake!" Chip looks dejected, his pretend smile covering his wincing. George then looks at his wallet and realizes he does not have enough money for his drink and the coffee cake. The bartender comes over and says "what can I get you"; George replies "I’ll have a whiskey sour and my boy here will have a nice cold glass of water."
