I understand that the effort to save the Cheers and Jeers postings is backed by Kos, but it is somewhat frustrating to see all of the fundraising without a mention of anyone else who may be in similar, if not worse situations.
I personally don't know Bill. I also don't know what line of work he is in. The reason for Bill being between jobs is also unknown to me, and it's really not my business nor my concern aside from the fact that I hate to see anyone out of work. I've enjoyed reading C&J from time to time, and spend time every day here reading and gaining knowledge and insight from everyone that posts here. I'm not a regular commenter, or diary writer. No, I'm much happier to read the more informed and educated opinions and pieces by the rest of you.
What I do know about, is being out of work. I've worked 2 weeks since early May. In the last 5 years, I've had work for just over 2 years worth, total. My wife can only work 2-3 days a week at her job due to several connective tissue and pain disorders. We have two boys, 14 and 7, with one having just been diagnosed with ADHD, and possibly bipolar.
I receive unemployment every two weeks, but the amount is less than 1/4 what I earn when I am employed. I live in Michigan and work in the construction industry. Our economy is in shambles at this point and does not appear to be heading towards recovery any time soon. Many of my fellow workers in Michigan are in the same position. Many of them have had to leave their families and work out of state for long periods of time because of the lack of work here at home. I have avoided going on the road to stay at home and help my wife with the children. I fear that soon I may have to leave my family for work out of state or lose the roof over our heads.
This diary isn't about asking for money or pity. It's about making sure that the community doesn't forget how many other people are in similar situations to Bill, though without the ability to write creatively. I would love to be able to solicit $50,000 to write a daily post on a blog, but I don't have that skill set.
This is not meant to be in any way a knock on Bill, or those who are helping him out. Simply a reminder that too many of the rest of us are out of work too.
