This morning I thought I’d check out the RNC home page just to see what’s up. The home page pretty much highlights Hillary, as expected. After all, the Democrat’s home page prominently features Rudy Giuliani, so their respective universes are fairly parallel in this respect.
Front and center this morning is an appeal to "sign the RNC petition to unlock the Clinton Library and print your own ‘full access’ library card." "Well alright," I thought, "just as soon as they release the details of the Cheney Energy Task Force proceedings back in early 2001. As we were soon to learn, however, the White House’s refusal to level with anyone regarding the Cheney Task Force was the beginning of a long tradition.
The Clinton Library flap is a molehill, and an illegitimate one at that. The Cheney Energy Task Force was a Mountain, one of many comprising a mountain range of secrecy that has reached Himalayan proportions. It takes some balls o’ brass for the RNC even to bring up secrecy, much less place it front and center on their home page.
It seems as if the RNC had read H.L. Mencken, but did so devoid of any sense of irony:
When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental — men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost... All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum.’ The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron. Baltimore Sun (26 July 1920)
Well, Mission Accomplished!
What really caught my eye on the RNC site, however, was a prominent button on the right column labeled "You Can’t Make This Up!" Uh oh. What absurdity lurks behind that button?
Voter fraud!
"Below are some of the most recently published articles pertaining to vote fraud around the country. Find your state to read about the problems in your area, or scroll down to browse the recent news nationwide."
Man oh man. What horror stories shall are uncovered therein? There was a red map of the U S of A, so I clicked my own state, New York, and here’s what the RNC EXPOSED!

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the election fraud case involving City of Poughkeepsie Councilwoman Gwen Johnson will be heard on Friday before Judge Thomas J. Dolan at the Dutchess County Courthouse. Republican Common Council candidate David Brown alleges that Johnson (D-7th Ward) witnessed a person produce signatures for two residents on the Democratic petition that Johnson filed with county elections officials in order to get on the ballot. So I clicked here and what I got was

Hmmm... three month old story gets error message. Well, I could enter "Gwen Johnson" into the Poughkeepsie Journal’s archive search. Only takes a second. Paydirt!
- Election fraud case thrown out
August 18, 2007
City of Poughkeepsie Councilwoman Gwen Johnson, D-7th Ward, is still on the Democratic ballot, after Judge Thomas J. Dolan dismissed an election fraud case brought against her by Republican Common Council candidate David Brown. Johnson was accused of witnessing two signatures signed by one person on a Democratic petition, but the complaint that was filed to the court was for the Working Families Party instead. Brown declined comment Friday.
Err, RNC — this is not even a molehill. Don’tcha use the Google?
This of course, is not a molehill either. It’s a mountain range. A big, freaking Ohio mountain range. And that’s just one state. Funny the RNC would bring up voter fraud. This time, bowling balls o’ brass.
I left my romp through RNC-land, took a well required shower, and went to work feeling pretty good. If that’s the best they’ve got, what’s to worry?
But then I remembered Timmeh flacking the secrecy thing, and of course Wild Lou (Spitzer wants to register thousands of illegals, I tell ya!) Dobbs flacking the voter fraud bit.
Here’s hoping Mencken was wrong.
