Watching C spann live now, they have just re read the bill (HR 4156) and are going to vote on a motion to recommit, (amendment to take out the timeline suggestion) Rep Murtha PA speaking now about bringing troops home to their families.
Voice vote no to recommit.
Manual vote requested, now for nxt 15 minutes.
Is anyone else watching this and do you have any druthers as to if this vote to change the bill will pass or not? Please comment, I've got a broken finger and cannot type that efficiently this month. Current tally 209 no to 159 yes to change it.
Now listening to the commentary as they vote, 6:32 pm pacific time.
edit: amendment to take out the timeline failed 192 yes to 231 no.
The bill would provide 50 billion in war funding to February, with a non binding timeline.
edit 2: the bill is passing on final vote, 218 to 203, 1 voted "present", 14 not voting
edit 3: WH spokesperson Dana Perino says the bill will be vetoed by the President, but the bill now goes to the Senate, where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is hinting he will filibuster if the timeline provision (non binding) is stripped out. It will be interesting to see if President Bush gets a turkey bill for Thanksgiving, or a reprieve.
This is what we said we wanted, Congress using the power of the purse to rein in the President's war binge spending. Yes, we probably don't have the over ride vote yet to overcome a veto, but we do have yet another public tallying of whom continues to support the President's disasterous war policies, and something of a suggestion of a timeline giving the President a year to bring the troops home.
Final roll call#1108 on HR 4156, emergency supplemental approp. DOD, and for other purposes
