This morning the US House of Representatives passed the Peru-United States Free Trade Agreement, expanding the NAFTA/CAFTA model to Peru. There are many things wrong with this deal, like forcing privatization of Peru's social security just to name one. If you want to depress you're self about all the bad things about it you can check out Public Citizen's fact sheet page here.
This was opposed by all major labor, environmental, faith, farming, human rights and other groups in here and Peru. And yet Democrats and Republicans banded together to make it seem like this was a uncontroversial vote despite the leader of the agreement in Peru came in a close second in the 2006 presidential elections and the Democrats won in 2006 on Fair Trade.
Non the less what has happened has happened. This will also easily pass the Senate so now it is time for action on the upcoming deals!
Bush will likely force votes on Panama, Colombia and South Korea FTA's before he leaves office. All of them are much worse. Panama is a Tax Haven. Even Hillary Clinton opposes SKFTA to give you a hint on how bad it is. And Colombia murders trade unionists. All three MUST be stopped. I believe the Democratic "leadership" opposes CFTA and SKFTA which are the two worst but PFTA is pretty bad to and we shouldn't have any more of this horrible model of NFTA FTA's.
So take action, call you're representatives, write you're representatives. Organize a protest, blog about it. Do something!
Besides David Sirota the netroots did almost nothing on this Peru trade deal. Lets do something on these other ones. Lets stop them!
UPDATE: Call the Senate. Call Obama, he's wrong. Call Clinton, make sure she gets this right! Call Dodd, make sure he gets this right! Call Biden, make sure he gets this right! Call Edwards, tell him he's right! Call Kucinich, tell him he made a helluva speech. Make this about the primary campaign if you want to.
