As of today, the Brits have oficially handed over control of Basra to the Iraqis. This is the final official acknowledgement of their physical withdrawal from the city last summer.
The British press - hell, the WORLD press - are full of articles saying essentially that they British are leaving a mess, with the local Shia militias controlling the place, not to mention controlling different units of the local police and military.
But according to my Wingnut friends, this just means we're not only winning in Iraq - it means we've won!
I'm a bowhunter, and in addition to lurking here, I also haunt a couple bowhunting websites. As you might imagine, most of the folks there are hardcore Bush Republicans. It's like another branch of the Wingnut Blogosphere.
Today, one of the wingnuttiest of the wingnuts posts an article from the London Times about the handover - generally regarded as a tacit acknowledgement of defeat by the British. And he says...
How can this be? Senator Reid said, "The war is lost." (Because he wanted us to lose.) GJ [editor: that's me] claimed the war was unwinnable and that the Iraqi's had failed to step forward.
BZZZZZTT! Wrong!
.....
The war is not lost, Senator Reid. To the contrary, it's been won, despite the efforts of you and your ilk to do everything possible to keep us from winning.
Wait. It gets worse.
When I point out that Basra's Chief of Police said " "They left me militia, they left me gangsters, and they left me all the troubles in the world,", their response was
What is really sad is GJ WANTS Iraq to be an issue next November. As far as he and the left are concerned, failure abroad is the way to ensure victory here.
If the progress continues, that means the Dems will have to run on domestic policy. Higher taxes, bigger government, socialized medicine...that platform will fail and they know it.
Wow. Just wow.
The Brits officially stop trying, and the Wingnuts call it winning. And worse, they think that this will win the 2008 election for them.
