From CQ Politics:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., admitted Thursday that she had underestimated the willingness of Republicans to stand behind President Bush’s Iraq policy despite the drubbing the GOP took in the polls in 2006.
"The assumption I made was that the Republicans would soon see the light," she said. Instead, the minority stuck to the president’s war policy in the face of unrelenting pressure from congressional Democrats and powerful lobbying campaigns by anti-war groups.
Translation: "I didn't fight because I didn't think I'd have to."
The latest in Pelosi's litany of excuses for not fighting.
The latest shit profiterole from Madame Speaker.
But it was this that pegged the needle on my nauseometer:
"That was a revelation to me, because I felt the American peoples' voices were so strong and still are in this regard that I hoped that with some compromise and reaching out there might be some change in direction," Pelosi said. "But they are sticking with the president on this."
Does she really want us to believe this?
Does she really want us to believe that she was this profoundly naive, this thuddingly incompetent, this incomprehensibly bumbling?
She thought Republicans would listen to the people?
Gee, Nancy, with trillions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives at stake, here's a suggestion: why not architect your entire strategy on the hope that the Baby Jesus would ride across the rainbow bridge on a candy unicorn and spirit our troops home on the wings of Tiffany angels?
There's no conceivable way she is/was this stupid. Nobody with functioning synapses bothered contemplating this, let alone believe it for a moment. The Republicans told us they didn't intend to budge. Hagel and others in the Republican Party that telegraphed their displeasure with the war were run out of town on a fucking rail. These you found as encouraging signs that Republicans would bend to the will of the people without any political pressure from Democrats?
Simply unfathomable.
But you know what? I say we take her on her word. And then unseat her from the Speakership as soon as humanly possible for gross incompetence. Anyone who would confess to placing the fate of our troops and peace in Iraq in the hands of Republicans is not fit to serve.
"The grassroots are justifiably disappointed and I am too that we have not done more to end this war," Pelosi said.
Disappointed?
Is that what I am?
You have no idea.
