I was watching NBC news tonight and right in the middle of their inteview with Al Gore they broke in with a weather alert and I missed about 1/2 the interview. When they did switch back it was right in the middle of a commericial break. I called the station really pissed, this is the same station, WTWO, which was first to cancel Book of Daniel, during the period Book of Daniel was on the air they ran Pat Robertson's CBN News.
Now, Jessie, the guy who does the weather, is really not a bad guy at all. He is fairly sharp and I sincerely doubt that he holds the radical right wing opinions that the station owners hold. One thing that has always bothered me, though, is he never, I mean never, runs stories on global warming.
We have a second local station, WTHI, and I am a fairly good friends of the Anchor. We talk all the time about politics and recently I began pressing him on doing some stories on Global Warming. He does understand the issue and has tried to get their weatherman, Kevin, to do some stories on it, but Kevin thinks it is hogwash.
I believe what I am seeing in my local market is probably widespread, at least in the smaller local markets. Most weathermen, as I understand it, have more training in media than meteorology and few have much background in climatology, the relevant science.
Reports I have seen on the reaction to the movie, An Inconveniet Truth, indicate that it has changed the opinion of even some of the stauchest objectors who have seen it. After my phone call to the station it dawned on me that I would sure love to get a copy of An Incovenient Truth into the hands of Jessie and Kevin. When the DVD does come out I plan to send them copies and encourage everyone to do the same. If we can get them talking about it on the broadcast it might be an effective effort. If we could get the Gore people to organize such an effort even better.
