They are without shame. They are without decency. They think that the American electorate is the stupidest bunch of mouthbreathers ever dropped onto God's Green Earth. They are the GOoPers, and if this week is any indication of their mood, then John Edwards must scare the hell out of them. Hot on the heels of his hiring two uppity wimmenfolk to do some campaign blogging, a new non-scandal rises from the muck of the hate machine hivemind. They dare to reveal... that John Edwards...
...owns a really big house.
Yes, that's it
This latest insult to the collective intelligence of the American people comes courtesy of our good friends at the Associated Press. While adding, rather lamely, at the end that, yes, there are other rich people on the early campaign trail (Hillary, St. John McCain, and Mitt Romney), the main thrust of the article is directed at Edwards' supposed hypocrisy of advocating for the middle and working class while himself being a fantabulously wealthy trial lawyer. The main sources of ire: Edwards' jealous-sounding Republican next-door neighbor, who already has a Giuliani '08 sign in his driveway...
"The home is a monster. It's way over the top," [Monty] Johnson said. "There's no way that a normal family could ever need a house like that. It's only going to hurt him. I don't think he's going to be able to sell his story that he's for the poor people."
And political consultant Bill Miller:
"Anything that appears to be extravagant or over the top is not the best card to play when you're running for president — especially when you're trying to differentiate yourself the way John Edwards is," said Miller, who has worked closely with the Republican Party.
I'm sure he has. Fortunately, that's about the extent of the article's concern-trolling. Considering that Edwards is the only candidate so far (that I've heard) even voicing their concerns, I highly doubt that the country's working class will begrudge him for doing well. Or, to quote the lovely Elizabeth:
"[I]t is no news bulletin that John and I have money. It is no news bulletin that he earned every cent."
