According to Drudge,
NY TIMES PLANS TUESDAY HIT ON GORE, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE: 'Scientists argue that Gore's warnings are full of exaggerated claims and startling errors'... Developing...
The first time I heard of the developing consensus in the scientific community about global warming was in the early or mid-1980's. The story was mostly word of mouth, because few scientists would run the risk of making the exaggerated claims and startling errors that their knowledge at the time would allow if it were pushed into definite claims and predictions. So is the NY Times going to blast Gore for taking the leap before we can yet see the details for certain? Well, I looked at the NYTimes science section that is published in print on Tues, but much of which is on the web on Monday.
So what is there to see? One headline is:
Top Scientists Warn of Water Shortages and Disease Linked to Global Warming
Sadly, we are told that "Floods will drive tens of millions of people from their homes each year, a new report says, and polar bears will exist mostly in zoos."
And the actual news in the article is really much worse:
within a couple of decades hundreds of millions of people will not have enough water, top scientists are likely to say next month at a meeting in Belgium.
At the same time, tens of millions of others will be flooded out of their homes each year as the earth reels from rising temperatures and sea levels, according to portions of a draft of an international scientific report by the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
...
But by 2080, hundreds of millions of people could face starvation, according to the report, which is still being revised.
....
But some scientists said the overall message is not likely to change when it is issued in early April in Brussels, where European Union leaders agreed Friday to work to cut greenhouse gas emissions substantially by 2020.
Then it will be presented to Bush and other leaders at a later summet. Lots of luck!
So what should we say if Al Gore receives the shaming tomorrow that Drudge says the NY Times is planning. How about: Way to go, Al. Thanks for taking the risks. You may end up having helped to save millions and millions of lives. And the US people did pick a president who could do more good than harm.
