The daily whine from the mainstream media is that Democrats are not doing anything since they took power. Of course, they (in a never ending attempt to appease those who accuse them of liberalism) are just parroting the right wing. Even on this site there is much impatience at the rate of change since Democrats won the House and Senate. But the recent story about the Water Reed Army Medical Center by the Washington Post and the sudden interest by the White House and Defence Department is due, in my opinion, to the fact that Democrats now control Congress. Let's give credit where it is due.
If the voters of America had not sent Democrats to Washington, Don Rumsfeld would probably still be Defense Secretary and the Republican Congress would surely be letting the Bush Administration continue to run free. Rumsfeld and the Bush administration knew of the problem there because of a Salon.com report saying so 2 years ago! Back then, the Bush administration claimed it was just a pack of liberal lies. Now, however, they leap into action (after first falsely claiming ignorance of the problems - we can get them to act now but it is probably too much to ask that they be honest with the American people).
Thank God the Democrats are providing some oversight of the Bush administration and forcing them to face some of the ugly truths they have created. Thanks also to the great reporting at the Washington Post. They are often smeared by the right as a leftie mouthpiece but where was the right wing Moonie paper the Washington Times? They could have investigated. Instead they just continued to do whatever they could to perpetuate the myths that hold together the so-called "Conservative" movement.
Let us hope that our country can still be salvaged after this dark period of lies, neglect and incompetence. The Democrats have not changed everything that is wrong with the United States in the past three months, but I feel that the Walter Reed revelations are an important and illustrative example that they are causing things to move in the right direction. We should give credit to them and the voters who sent them to Washington.
