I posted a diary at securingamerica.com saying that this position is the perfect opportunity for Wes to get front and center so that the most qualified voice on geopolitical security can get the attention needed. The consensus at securingamerica was that it's a preposterous idea. For one thing: "If the position really had the authority to set the strategy, I think Wes would do it no matter what the risks. [Furthermore, the administration doesn't really want to change its strategy, so how could Wes be expected to make a difference."
Not withstanding how disingenous Bushco is about their motivations for their "strategy" (oil), the idea here is to put them on the spot. In light of how 3 retired generals already turned down the position, just imagine what would happen if all of the Democrats, the 55 ambassadors who endorsed Clark, and every other military man who has attested to Clark's caliber over the course of his career were to publicly advocate for Bush to accept Wes for the position. If Bush shoots him down, it'll prove that his motivations (and claims of magnaminity) are bullshit. And if accepts Clark for the position, he'll be able to call them out for any bullshit when he sees them trying to undermine his strategy because of their political reasons.
..almost done..
This would be a win/win. There would be no down side to Clark making it known that he's interested in filling the position. (Obviously the position is meant to make the guy a scapegoat, but I'm sure that Wes would be happy to be a scapegoat for Bush if it meant the loss of one less soldier.)
