This year's winner of the Pultizer Prize in Photography went to Renée C. Byer of the Sacramento Bee. For those of us that read that paper, I remember her protrayal of Derek Madsen and his mother Cyndie. Derek was dying of cancer and Cyndie was a single mother.
It is a touching photo essay and well deserving of the Pultizer.
Sadly, Derek did lose his battle with cancer. Just like my nephew did at nearly the same age four years earlier.
This is the power of photography, the way to tell a story, any story. The emotion that it can fill us with. I hope that we do not forget the power of a simple image, or images, in today's world of YouTube and camera videos. Because it is still those split seconds that can tell you so much.
I know that Renée's work made me remember all of my times with my nephew as he lost his battle. It made me feel more human and I thank her and everyone else, pro or amteur, that picks up a camera and tells a story.
I would like the Kossack Nation to share some of their thoughts about photography in today's world.
