According to NBC's Andrea Mitchell Gen. David Petraeus has been meeting with Republican members of Congress to get them to support Bush administration Iraq policy. Think Progress has discussion and video.
Petraeus meeting with Congressional Republicans separate from Democrats for the purpose of whipping votes for Bush policy is troublesome. Our military is supposed to remain apolitical.
How should Democrats respond to Petraeus becoming a Republican cheerleader?
Democrats should admonish Petraeus over this.
The Democrats should clearly say that Bush and the Republicans started the Iraq War in part because it was good domestic politics. And that Bush has continuously managed the situation--which is now an unending occupation of a country teetering on the precipice of becoming a "failed state"--as a domestic political issue, not a foreign policy problem.
Bush's desire to play politics is the reason we're in Iraq and the reason the situation has gotten as bad as it has.
Petraeus was supposed to be a fresh start, but it looks like he's an even bigger political hack than the Republican flunkies that preceded him.
The military should not be politicized. Petraeus should be held accountable for the harm he's done to his credibility and the credibility of the military.
