Warrentless wiretaps lead to arrests (and the investigating prosecutor was not appointed by politicians and can't be fired by politicians).
"Ci sono anche poliziotti ed ex agenti segreti stranieri tra i nuovi arresti ordinati nell'ambito dell'inchiesta milanese sui dossier illegali. ...[including] John Paul Spinelli, ex agente Cia. "
That is "Police officers and foreign intelligence agents are among those named in new arrest warrants issued as part of the Milanese investigation of illegal dossiers ... including ex CIA agent John Paul Spinelli."
If only the rule of law were respected in the USA the way it is respected here in Italy.
And no I never expected to write that ever.
p.s. I was really strongly tempted to translate John Paul Spinelli which would give Giovanni Paolo Reefers, but this is serious.
To explain why there can be no US Attorney type scandal in Italy, elected officials have almost no role in choosing judges or prosecutors in Italy.
Both are "magistrati" who are first hired based on their performance on a written exam on the law which is graded double blind (the grader only knows a number on the exam paper and not the applicant's name).
They are then promoted by other magistrates under the final authority of a body most of whose members are elected by magistrates and the other nominated by parliament.
This is not very democratic, and defense attorneys absolutely hate the fact that judges and prosecutors are part of the same body (one can switch back and forth during one's career).
The system does have its advantages however, especially if almost all politicians are corrupt. In the early 90s Italy was transformed by the prosecution of most ruling politicians.
The Italian voters responded by electing the biggest crook in Italy prime minister in 1994, but they can't say they weren't warned.
