I was struck while watching the Presidential debate on how the candidates who were asked about the recent Supreme Court decision accepted that an overwhelming majority of Americans support the ban on so-called "partial birth" abortion. They then allow themselves to be backed into a corner by accepting the premise -- that they are taking a position that is contrary to the beliefs of the vast majority of the American public. They need a better response and I am posting my first diary in hopes that they or their staff will take notice.
Polling does show that if you ask the question using the language "partial-birth" abortion, initially a vast majority of the public does support a ban on the procedure. However, I think that our candidates need to point out that once the public is informed that there is no health exception in the ban, public opinion becomes evenly split.
So, candidates, please DO NOT ever accept the premise that the public supports this ban by an overwhelming majority. You are not part of an extreme minority on this issue. Half the public is with you when they know their is no health exception. Point it out. Add it to your talking points. It only takes a few seconds!
