Did anyone else just see Carl Levin on This Week? He came out strongly against cutting off funding for the war.
And came out strongly against the Reid-Feingold bill. In fact, he unequivocally stated that the Democrats would return a vetoed bill with funding restored, and even seemed to suggest that this is the bill that he favored. He said Reid had made clear that his co-sponsored bill did not represent the caucus position and that Levin could guarantee it would never pass. He made the conflict all about voluntary benchmarks.
This seemed like the turning-point on negotations, as though Levin went on to articulate the new Democratic position and clearly distinguish it from Reid-Feingold.
John Kyl, the other senator on the show, quickly jumped on this new position and asked what does it means to support benchmarks without any criteria for actual withdrawal or changes in funding?
Did other people see this segment of the news and interpret it in the same way -- as a significant turn around by the Dems?
