Here's the latest news about "Voices In Conflict," the Wilton (CT) High School student theater piece about the Iraq War that was censored by the WHS authorities in March.
From a trusted source:
It's been announced that the Music Theatre International "Courage in Theater" award that was announced last month [sic: actually it was announced in March] will be presented to each of the members of Bonnie Dickinson’s Advanced Theater Arts class as part of the Annual Fine and Performing Arts Awards night at Wilton High School on May 23 at 7:30 PM.
Presenting the award on behalf of Music Theatre International will be well known Hollywood actor Joe Pantoliano.
It is not known at this time whether Principal Tim Canty will follow his usual custom and be in attendance that night.
In other related news, a schedule of performance commitments for "Voices in Conflict" has been announced. It is
- June 6 - Fairfield Theatre Co. Fairfield, CT
- June 8 - Westport Arts Council, Westport, CT
- June 9 - Vineyard Theatre, NYC
- June 10 - The Culture Project, NYC
- June 15 - The Public Theatre, NYC
Tickets are free but very hard to come by, since all of these theaters are small intimate settings.
There still may be other performances but nothing firm yet.
I wouldn't want to be Tim Canty, having to decide whether or not to show up for this. Talk about real-life theater!
No word as to when or if the play will be performed at WHS, although at this point it seems unlikely to happen before the end of the school year when almost half the cast will be graduating.
Five days after the Theater Arts II class receives their well-earned awards, Wilton will hold its annual Memorial Day parade. Speaking at the memorial will be Iraq War vet Lt. Zach Alessi-Friedlander, son and brother of the two whose protests led to the censorship of "Voices In Conflict".
