We spend millions upon millions in Iraq to rebuild it and yet in the Delta Region, many Americans live in poverty and conditions almost if not equal to a third world nation, and like the Americans trapped for days in the flood waters of New Orleans, the Federal Government ignores these people. Much of what is profoundly American and what people love about America has come from the Delta. Its a number of counties stretching from the boot heel of Missouri down to New Orleans. These are places where total poverty and cycles of generational poverty exist. Yet its an area of the country rich in culture, food, talent, and untapped potential.
In the 1930's, Franklin Delano Roosevelt began a series of programs, including the Tennessee Valley Authority as a way to lift areas of this country hit hardest by the Depression out of poverty. In the 1960's, Lyndon Baines Johnson, focused on Appalachia, where incidentally I was born in West Virginia, to focus on using the strength of the Federal Government to move those areas out of poverty.

Yesterday, former State Senator Kevin Smith (D) of Helena-West Helena went on the Lynch show. He defended the work that the Mississippi Grassroots Delta Caucus and Delta Regional Authority are doing to try to work to eliminate poverty. The link to his interview is : http://lyncho.com/... Today, U.S. Congressman Marion Berry (D) of Gillette went on the Lynch show to answer why he wants to zero out the DRA's Budget. The link to his interview is : http://lyncho.com/...
Congressman Berry supports our troops in Iraq, says the Iraq War is the worst since the Second World War, and has consistently supported funding to rebuild Iraq. Yet in his interview he gives a circular reasoning for why he wants to zero out DRA's Budget.
Does Congressman Berry support the DRA or oppose the DRA? Will he seek to zero out the budget for DRA? Will he support $300 million for the Delta or not?
Call Congressman Berry at 1.202.225.4076 and ask him these questions.
Berry is proud he supports funding for our troops in Iraq and rebuilding Iraq to the tune of $70 BILLION http://www.house.gov/...
So what is $300 million for an area that includes his district and is the poorest region of OUR country.
We are fixing to get a new President. We have a Democratic Congress. People in the Delta are hurting and needing assistance now. We will never get the auto plants or steel plants we desire till we build up the infastructure of the region. I am asking you to sign the petition and join this Virtual March on Washington, D.C. Lets remind our representatives in Congress its time to take care of OUR people first.
