Novelist Barbara Kingsolver has written a fascinating non-fiction book about her family's "experiment' with eating locally for an entire year.
With energy prices going up and up, food prices will follow. We use so much oil in producing the food we eat (tractors, herbicides, pesticides, transporting fruits and vegetables an average of 1,500 miles) that it's almost literally true that we are eating oil. For every calorie of food energy you eat, it takes ten calories of oil.
Sooner or later, and the sooner the better for our personal health and the health of the planet, we need to start eating local food.
In her book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A year of Food Life, Kingsolver describes what she and her family did to get all of their food for a year from things they either grew themselves or were able to get from close by.
