The Tragedy of the Touch-Screen Voting Machine
The same Elections Systems & Software brand of voting machines that kept Christine Jennings out of Congress have caused trouble in other places besides Florida. From the St. Petersburg Times:
"In Waldenburg, Ark., population 80, one mayoral candidate garnered zero votes -- a number he knew was incorrect because he had cast a ballot for himself. In Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, some machines shut down prematurely and had to be restarted manually after every vote, forcing poll workers to switch to paper ballots in some precincts."

Rep. Klein and Sen. Nelson Make Hurricane Tracking a Priority
U.S. Representative Ron Klein has joined with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and other members of Congress to introduce the "Improved Hurricane Tracking and Forecasting Act of 2007" to provide NASA with funding to replace the dangerously outdated satellite for QuickSCAT. This satellite currently provides the most accurate data for forecasting hurricanes and is in danger of going off-line. "Allowing our ability to track hurricanes to deteriorate before our very eyes is unacceptable," Klein said. "Given that over half of all Americans live within 50 miles of the coast line, this is not just an issue that affects us in South Florida, but is an issue that impacts a majority of the American people. I am committed to working with both Democrats and Republicans in Congress to ensure that we secure the funding we need for this vital satellite."
Building the Netroots: Blogger Lunch at the J-J in June
Florida has a burgeoning progressive Netroots family, and the Party is excited to hold its first ever face-to-face meeting of online activists from across the state during our annual Jefferson-Jackson Weekend. The Netroots is a collection of activists who utilize online discussion message boards, or web-logs ("blogs"), as an instant and effective means of communication with other activists. It allows efficient organizing and the instant transfer of information, keeping a large number of people organized and informed at all times.
The lunch discussion will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, at the Westin Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, FL. We encourage attendance at what will undoubtedly become an important Democratic tradition in Florida politics. Tickets are $50 (to cover costs of food and room rental), and the event is open to all. Attendees can purchase tickets online at http://www.fladems.com/...
