In William James' essay, "The Will to Believe," he states that
"if we believe in the possibility of some future event taking place, then this belief increases our power to help make the event happen when the time comes for action."
a k a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Just after the wrath of President Buzzkill's handling of Hurricane Katrina I implored Bernie Sanders and Thom Hartmann and all of Thom's listening audience to demand Bush and Cheney resign. They both scoffed at the implication that it would ever happen, as if that had any relevance to whether it was incumbent upon us to demand justice and accountability and our common security.
Tonight Mike Malloy, with more desperation than ever before, raised the question as to what it is going to take for us to gain the leverage we need to Rectify Bush/Cheney.
For starters, it'll take Mike Malloy to start voicing his right to see Bush and Cheney out of power in the immediate future through resignations. With the father of Conservatism--William Buckley--being a voice for resignations, you've got all the cover you need to deflect the Rovian media whores.
Then it'll take follow through by Hartmann and Sanders et al to start leading by example, i.e., speaking out for what we're entitled to based on principle instead of acquiescing to the notion that the MSM gets to determine what's realistic or in the best interest of justice.
The "only" thing that kept Bush/Cheney from having to resign after Katrina was because Thom Hartmann and Bernie Sanders decided to go foward based on what the general public would expect instead of leading by living and speaking by their conscience.
The lesson of slavery and Vietnam was the axiom that it's better to die on on your feet than to live on your knees. If a critical mass of slaves one day all had decided to just stop working in the fields and stand there until they were killed or freed, then slavery would have ended on that day. And if when they had implemented the draft, enough men said, "No thanks, you can send me to jail first" and/or "I'll send you a postcard from Canada" then the war would have had to been cancelled due to lack of an army.
If enough people demand resignations then the MSM will not be able to ignore the case for it. Which of course is black and white and ample. Which is also why it would be hollow and feckless to merely be calling for impeachment since we're entitled to so much more.
The jury in on Bush/Cheney's malfeasance and IMO thereisnospoon's diary, G.O.P. in Trouble: My Personal Iowa Experience, should be the pivotal insight into middle America's collective disdain and betrayal. These people are looking for a leader to step up to the plate.
My favorite diary of all time, Leadership on Daily Kos, by Rusty1776, perfectly underscored Howard Dean's point that we can't expect our leaders in government to solve our problems.
No time like the present to prove Howard Dean right.
P.S. I've said it before and I'll say it again: follow through means Nancy needs to decide who her VP is going to be. And since so many people on Daily Kos voice the reasonable caution against a tandem impeachment because it would be tantamount to a coup by Pelosi, she should immediately announce that she'll immediately resign the moment her VP is sworn in.
Some people (such as commenters on DK I've encoutered firsthand) say that it would be some sort of travesty for Pelosi to resign. Poppycock and rasberries to those people until I hear a good reason to do otherwise.
