I have an idea on how we can make a mass protest of the war in a convenient, simple and effective manner. It need not be dressed in a million words so here it is:
Everyday, at noon, we sit down on the ground for one minute: wherever we happen to be.
The location should be as public and obvious as possible, but it should not be obstructive. Sitting on a sidewalk or in a hallway is the right idea, a crosswalk the wrong idea.
more below...
Ideally the protester would sit some place that would call attention to itself. During that minute the protester meditates, prays or holds in their thoughts the pain and suffering of those directly and indirectly affected by the war. If the protester is asked why she is sitting she should explain exactly that.
This is a passive, nonviolent protest form. If the protester is asked to move she should explain in a single sentence what she is doing and that she will only be there for one minute. Something like "I'm taking one minute to hold in my thoughts all of those who have suffered due to this war. Do you mind if I complete that minute?" The protester should comply if she is asked to move immediately. Absent non-violence training and preparation it is foolish and even counter-productive to be overly aggressive in a protest, especially as a lone individual.
The beauty of this method is that it is effective without the need for mass coordination or even media coverage. It can be spread virally by small groups. It is simple and safe way for people to show a stand of conscious with a self chosen degree of risk.
For example, a group of office workers could choose to begin their lunch hour at noon by sitting on the floor for a minute. This action would generate questions and interest from coworkers. By keeping the stated goal simple and non-confrontational it is open to all because it does not require a strong ideological commitment.
I have presented this idea with the hope that it can be promoted and put into action, in one form or another, by a larger acting group.
