For some time now, MoveOn has adhered closely to the Democratic party line, often to the dismay of members who feel the Democrats are not doing nearly enough to end the war or to pursue accountability through impeachment.
This may be changing.
On Thursday MoveOn issued a strongly worded warning, saying that "if Democrats appear to capitulate to Bush - passing a bill without measures to end the war - the unity Democrats have enjoyed and Democratic leadership has so expertly built, will immediately disappear." The group went on to say that if the Democrats passed a bill without a timeline and with all five months of funding for the war, MoveOn "will move to a position of opposition."
It's good to see MoveOn listening to their grassroots constituents on the issue, and hopefully they will do the same for impeachment. As many of you know, MoveOn recently begin polling on the question. It turns out that this poll was intended for only a small group of its members, as a way of testing the waters on the issue. This is a promising first step, but MoveOn should go further. A new petition, signed by leading progressive figures including Medea Benjamin, Noam Chomsky, Cindy Sheehan, and Howard Zinn is calling upon MoveOn to ask all of its three million members how they feel about impeachment.
