On average, Americans consume about 386 million gallons of gasoline each day.
If we were able to reduce our fuel consumption by just 5% we would save 7.05 billion gallons of gas each year. Just think of how this would affect the supply, and therefore, the price of gasoline and of course Big Oil and OPEC
There would also be a significant reduction in the amount of damage we do to the environment.
Each gallon of gasoline that we burn releases roughly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, as I’m sure you’re well aware, is believed to be one of the main contributors to global warming and the "greenhouse effect."
By reducing fuel consumption by just 5%, we would keep 1.4 billion tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. While I have no idea whether or not this would make a significant dent in global warming, it certainly can’t hurt.
During the Carter administration we reduced our use of gasoline, so why not now? Do you think it is because of the Oil Men in the WH?
What about our own Democrats? Why are they not calling for an effort to reduce?
Just moving to 55 MPH on the highways would go a long way toward sticking it to Big Oil and OPEC.
As for me, I’ve started to slow down, view the scenery, and support peace and the protection of our environment.
