In a word, religion.
The Democratic party used to be the party of inclusion. Now it seems to be the party of inclusion... if you're a Christian. More over the fold.
Since when does a Democratic presidential candidate have to go for a dog and pony show in front of religious people of ANY stripe? I thought I could dismiss it as a one time deal, but it seems that all the top candidates have taken it upon themselves to go on and on about their faith, how important it us to them, etc. While that's fine, I really, really don't want someone who's going to base their decisions in office on a book that has been used to justify horrors for centuries. That's what the CURRENT president is doing. And I want someone in office who is NOTHING LIKE the current president. It's not even like they're reaching out to everyone with faith - it's clearly aimed at Christians exclusively.
From Clinton talking about how her faith got her through her issues with Bill, to Obama talking about how he "didn't know what bible they [Republicans] were reading from" to Edwards talking about how is son's death reaffirmed his faith, apparently it's chic to pander to the 'religious left'.
Listen up, democratic candidates. You want my vote? Stand up and say, in no uncertain terms, and without ambiguity - "I am an American first and foremost, and my allegiance is to the Constitution of the United States above all else." The thoughts and ideals contained in the constitution are better than any religious system ever devised, and the founders knew it.
Enough with this religious drivel. America is bigger than any one religion, or even all religions. The president should be a shining example and the embodiment of the principles contained in the constitution. Anything less doesn't do the document justice.
