The News Blog has a PayPal link to help Steve Gilliard's family with the cost of his funeral:

Funerals cost an arm and a leg. A guy like Gilliard probably doesn't have any sort of life insurance. His family, along with being devastated at their loss, now has to come up with several thousand dollars.
Help if you can.
UPDATE II: Some more info via Jim from L.A. at the NewsBlog site:
We have restored the PayPal link (ABOVE). Steve's family now has access to his account, so if you would like to donate something to help defray the costs of his funeral, or to help out his family in this time of need, it would be most appreciated.
Jim also points to a New York Times BlogTalk column on Gilliard, and mentions an obit should run in the Times later in the week.
UPDATE: I have no connection with Gilliard's site or with the people now taking care of it, so I have no idea how much they've gotten. But if you just count up the number of posts here and figure ten bucks a head - WOW!
I never met Gilliard, though I read him obsessively , occasionally commented on his site and exchanged a couple of emails over the years. He was an internet pioneer, and it's a fitting tribute to him and what he stood for that his internet "family" is chipping in like this.
As just an interested bystander, I thank you all.
