I said home, not house, on purpose.
I live on a military base in the SE. My home is in a very quiet, peaceful and lovely little cul-de-sac, which very few people even realize is there. I love it.
They take my Bachelor Allowance for Housing (BAH) (about $1,300 a month) for a decent roof over my head, free electric, free water and free repairs. All in all, however, I'm losing approx $200 dollars per month compared to the apartment I was living in previously.
But it's worth it for the neighborhood.
But some of that is about to change.
Follow below the fold.
The military is, of course, following the mold of privatization set forth by Rumsfield and Bush.
They are privatizing the ownership of my home. A private company has purchased/leased (I don't know) some of the most expensive homes in Jacksonville (on the ST. Johns river).
They will run them (into the ground) as private companies do, with as little cost and maintenance as possible to gain the most profit.
The maintainance staff is being cut to 1/3 of what it currently is, with less pay and much higher medical expenses than they currently have. Of course, most of them who know the neighborhood and their jobs will quit and move on to more lucrative positions. We will miss them.
The houses on the other side of the river are worth multiple millions of dollars (I, unfortunately, do not live in one of those comparable houses on our side of the river).
We currently enjoy maintenance on demand, free electric and water, but that's all about to change.
Come October, we can expect turning over our total BAH and paying for electricity and water, plus some repairs. AND, the electric and water bills will not be metered! For the first year, we will be paying based on the square footage of our home. It doesn't matter how much electricity or water we personally use, only how big our house is.
I WANT MY GOVERNMENT BACK!!
